Does Coffee Really Dehydrate Your Body?
Need to stay up late to finish an assignment? How about a cup of coffee. Slept too late and need to look fresh in the morning for work? A dose of coffee can do wonders! What about when it is packed with snow outside and you are trapped inside your cold house? Put on some beans to brew, nothing can warm you up faster than a steaming cup of coffee!
Coffee has rather become a necessity for many of us living in this extremely fast paced and unrelenting world. And while it is a great way to boost your energy and feel refreshed, overconsumption of this bitter-sweet drink (depending on your taste) also brings with it some harmful side effects.

One of the harmful side effects that excessive coffee consumption may bring with itself is said to be dehydration of the skin and the body. While this notion is believed by many, there is quite a bit of doubt regarding its accuracy and truthfulness.
CAFFEINE AS A DIURETIC
The reason why coffee got famous for being a dehydrating beverage is a study conducted in 1928, which showed that participants who constantly consumed caffeinated water and coffee produced up to 50 percent more urine as compared to those that did not. The caffeine molecule acts as a diuretic, meaning it causes the kidneys to produces more urine than usual.
Despite the fact that caffeine is a diuretic is true, it is actually quite a mild one. Many believe that the real reason why you tend to remove more water from your body than upon coffee consumption is simply because you have ingested a considerable amount of liquid.
So in the past few years, several studies have been conducted to determine whether or not coffee is to be blamed for dry skin and a thirsty body. And most say that coffee while causes a slight increase in urination, does not contribute to a disturbed homeostatic environment in the body. Hence it may be concluded that coffee does not have major dehydrating effects.
A recent study at the University of Birmingham further reinstates this point through an experiment where individuals were asked to first regularly consume coffee for a period of time, and later asked to consume the same amount of water for the same period of time. It was concluded at the end of the experiment that the hydration levels of the bodies in the coffee-drinking phase were similar to that of the levels in the water-drinking phase, thus confirming coffee’s minimal diuretic effect.
TO DRINK OR NOT TO DRINK: COFFEE EDITION
So in the end, what is the verdict regarding coffee being a dehydrating drink or not? The fact is that while the caffeine present in coffee is a mild diuretic, coffee does not play a significant role in making your trips to the bathroom more frequent or in giving you dry skin. Despite this fact, it is not recommended that you drink gallons of coffee everyday! Anything in excess turns out to be harmful to the body. Limit your coffee consumption to a cup a day and enjoy the invigorating drink without allowing it to damage your body.
